Holistic and Interdisciplinary
Theakademie instructs its students through a holistic and interdisciplinary approach. Through these principles, our methods attempt to embody both the entirety of art itself and the whole human experience. Students are challenged on physical, psychological, and intellectual levels, creating a process that engages all aspects of the individual. Just as the concept of wholeness focuses on the diverse, complexity of nature and experience, our projects and programssupport and actualize this process as the students develop.
Theakademie values the concept of task sharing. Instead of focusing on the specialization of one area, students are encouraged to be involved in all practical and necessary aspects of a production. The programs and studies give students access to theoretical tools and team-oriented work strategies and techniques, so that they can become active and well-rounded participants in the process.
From the start, our students are an integral part of concrete theater work. They must learn to be creative under tight deadlines and manage a variety of tasks at one given time. One of the central principles developed through our programs is the interlacing complexity of the individual, what surrounds the individual, and what the individual creates. For instance, students must learn to conceptualize a play as a whole network of elements and to optimize the creative working process through their techniques and contributions into each aspect of the production.
Theakademie also supports the dialogue between different mediums and offers many opportunities to access other cultures and artistic expressions through theaterreaise e.V. and other external partners. Students are not only able to enhance their skills but also expand their own artistic knowledge and identity.
International and Multicultural
Theakademie welcomes people from all over the world, both students and teachers. We search for people with different backgrounds, who speak different languages, in hopes of adding a variety of textures to our work and atmosphere. Teachers and students can contribute their own unique perspectives and experiences, enriching our holistic methods. Through cooperation with our international partners, e.g. the summer and winter academies, we create many opportunities to connect and work with people all over the world.
Indeed, Theakademie is open to all people, regardless of cultural or language backgrounds. Students with multi-cultural backgrounds have the opportunity to compare, contrast, and combine the different cultures that make up their own history. Through creativity, they are able to open paths to new aesthetic forms of personal expression.
Likewise, German students can also share and explore their own perspectives and experiences, while exposing themselves other cultures.
Students who cannot speak German can still find their place within Theakademie. All students are encouraged and supported while learning their foreign language.
Self-Confidence and Initiative
The art world is expanding today more than ever before, offering myriad expressions, ideas, and opportunities. While producing art, artists must repeatedly cultivate their perception of their environments, be sensitive to its subtleties and phenomena, while relating what is around them back to themselves. For this reason, artists must have a sense of their own artistic identity, as fluid as it may be. It is the aim of all of our studies to provide the framework, tools, and guidance, for creating self-assuring, individual identity.
Based on the ideal of practical, hands-on work, our studies support theoretical and personal development. Individuals are able develop both internally and externally, and establish themselves within the art world, making a space for their own creative, unique expression and identity.
These aims are not only essential for personal artistic success but also practical survival, such as supporting oneself financially as an artist. Without the awareness of self, it is impossible to manage the “elbow race” of the art world. One must stay creative, overflowing with ideas, charged by self-initiative and self-confidence. Theakademie not only helps students discover and nurture their own identity, but also build self-confidence and assurance through recognizing their abilities and learning how to use them. |
