Courses - Dramaturgy

Concept and Objective of the Course

The dramaturgy course is designed to introduce the student to one of the essential, if lesser known positions in theatre production. The dramaturge is in charge with the thematic aspects of production, scheduling and audience communication. It has become convenient to differentiate internal from external dramaturgy, although the typical dramaturge is in charge of both these aspects. The dramaturge's task has sometimes been described as In-Theatre-Criticism.

External dramaturgy extends to the scheduling of repertoires, the presentation of ongoing or planned productions to the public and the media, and often the organization of educational offerings for young audiences. To fulfill these tasks the dramaturge must develop not just a thorough knowledge of all aspects of theatre art, but a keen interest in public intellectual debates and the Zeitgeist generally.

Internal dramaturgy consists mostly in assisting the directing team in reading and editing a play, as well as in the development of an interpretive line. The dramaturge will closely monitor the rehearsal process and make suggestions clarifying the intent of the production. His technique will vary according to the respective director's working style.

As modern theatre practice increasingly moves away from productions based on classic theatre texts, the dramaturge, director and actors will have to acquire shared skills and techniques of performance composition. The theakademie dramaturgy program will therefore be conducted in close association with the directing program. Additionally, dramaturgy students will be introduced to all the other aspects of theatre arts taught at the theakademie. It is understood that while the division of tasks is a practical necessity of theatre work, narrow specialization cannot be conducive to satisfactory artistic results.

All our courses are centered on practical production work and the on-the-job acquisition of theoretical tools and working techniques.
